The Myth of 90 Percent: Only a Small Fraction of Guns in Mexico Come From U.S.
While 90 percent of the guns traced to the U.S. actually originated in the United States, the percent traced to the U.S. is only about 17 percent of the total number of guns reaching Mexico.By William La Jeunesse and Maxim Lott

powered by BaynoteYou've heard this shocking "fact" before -- on TV and radio, in newspapers, on the Internet and from the highest politicians in the land: 90 percent of the weapons used to commit crimes in Mexico come from the United States.
-- Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said it to reporters on a flight to Mexico City.
-- CBS newsman Bob Schieffer referred to it while interviewing President Obama.
-- California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said at a Senate hearing: "It is unacceptable to have 90 percent of the guns that are picked up in Mexico and used to shoot judges, police officers and mayors … come from the United States."
-- William Hoover, assistant director for field operations at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, testified in the House of Representatives that "there is more than enough evidence to indicate that over 90 percent of the firearms that have either been recovered in, or interdicted in transport to Mexico, originated from various sources within the United States."
There's just one problem with the 90 percent "statistic" and it's a big one:
It's just not true.
In fact, it's not even close. By all accounts, it's probably around 17 percent.

I have always liked Ms Harmon because she is hot and always plays an intelligent character. She is not a bimbo or brain dead like so many of the popular actresses. I am glad to see that she is willing to keep her backbone!
On the other hand, I am so tired of Liberals who only see President Obama's skin color and then want to drop to their knees in front of him. They are morons who think that just because a guy is 1/4 black he is better than any white person, even if the white person is a genius. Not that I am calling McCain a genius, but comparatively he is closer to it than the Liberal Messiah.
When the great black icon Marty King said he had a dream of a color blind America, he did not tell whites to ignore color and blacks to become obsessed with it. He wanted us to stop paying attention to it. Period! I know more blacks and Liberals who are concerned with it than any other group.
Ms Harmon, I would love to have you meet my wife and I for dinner sometime. Your "women's murder club" movies are some of her favorites, which I watched for ulterior reasons. Don't let the Liberal racists get you down! Keep logic in your life and you will be fine. As I am sure you know. Even if you might want to try and shake some intelligence into the heads of these racist morons.

Angie Harmon: I'm Not Racist Because I Disagree With ObamaAngie Harmon is not afraid to come out and say she doesn't like how President Obama is handling the job -- but she's sick of having to defend herself from being deemed a racist.
"Here's my problem with this, I'm just going to come out and say it. If I have anything to say against Obama it's not because I'm a racist, it's because I don't like what he's doing as President and anybody should be able to feel that way, but what I find now is that if you say anything against him you're called a racist," Harmon told Tarts at Thursday's Los Angeles launch of the new eyelash-growing formula, Latisse. "But it has nothing to do with it, I don't care what color he is. I'm just not crazy about what he's doing and I heard all about this, and he's gonna do that and change and change, so okay ... I'm still dressing for a recession over here buddy and we've got unemployment at an all-time high and that was his number one thing and that's the thing I really don't appreciate. If I'm going to disagree with my President, that doesn't make me a racist. If I was to disagree with W, that doesn't make me racist. It has nothing to do with it, it is ridiculous."
Speaking of dislikes, the starlet has also had enough of the double-standards in the media.
"I do think McCain would have done a better job, only because I think he has more experience. I also think if W or John McCain or Reagan would have gone and done a talk show, the backlash would have been so huge and in his face, and 'What is our president doing? How unclassy!' But Obama does it and no one says anything," Harmon said.
And in spite of the scornful opinions most of her Tinseltown counterparts have shared on Gov. Sarah Palin, Harmon remains a true fan.
"I admire any kind of woman like her. My whole motto is to know what I stand for and know what I don't stand for and have the courage to live my life accordingly and she does exactly that. The fact that this woman has made the decisions she's made and literally lived her life according to that and takes heat for it is absolutely disgusting to me," she added. "People cannot look at this woman. I really think they're afraid of her and her morals, ethics and values and the fact that she hangs on them. Is she the most experienced person in the world? But she was running to be the Vice President, so we then put the most inexperienced person as the President. That didn't make any sense to me."
However Harmon is definitely in the Hollywood minority when it comes to her criticism of Obama as other lasses at the Latisse party were quick to advocate their unequivocal support.
"The sort of criticism over the last couple of weeks is a bit unfounded, he's been in office for barely any time and I think he inherited a lot on his plate and he's doing a pretty remarkable job," quipped Mandy Moore. "I think it's cool that he went on Leno and I watched the "60 minutes" interview as well last week. The guy is just so articulate and he is so well versed in something that is so new to him and I think he has a good team around him. It sounds cliché, but he makes me feel proud to be an American."
Debra Messing also told Tarts that our new President is not only meeting her expectations, but going far beyond.
"He is thoughtful and considerate and he gets all the information before he speaks which I think is a wonderful quality for the ruler of the free world to have," she explained.
The ladies of "Entourage" certainly showed their Obama-loyalty too.
"It's not an over night process. It's going to get worse before it gets better; we're all kind of in the same boat now. Everybody's broke and everybody's struggling and he makes me feel like I know him and that I know Michelle and that they're like us and they're out to try to save the USA. It's just an amazing period to watch him take on these challenges and everyday in the news to hear about AIG or possibly global currency changing, it's incredible. He's facing big challenges and he's got a lot of support and I'm just praying things get better," Debi Mazar said, while co-star Perrey Reeves added that Obama is a "wonderful leader" and she's looking forward to his future endeavors.
All I can say is:
"Dear Lord, please don't! Please! This is scary!"
I hope that this is a comedy.

Julianne Moore has been cast as Hillary Clinton in new film "Special Relationship".The actress will star opposite Dennis Quaid -- who will play Hillary's husband, ex-U.S. President Bill Clinton -- in the movie which will show how Bill's 'inappropriate relationship' with White House intern Monica Lewinsky nearly ended his time in power.
A source said: "This is a big role for both of them. Playing Hillary, a wife who stands by her unfaithful husband, will be something she can get her teeth stuck into."
Dennis reportedly beat four other leading actors - Russell Crowe, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alec Baldwin and Tim Robbins - to win the role of Bill.
"Special Relationship" is the closing film of a political trilogy written by Peter Morgan, following "The Deal" -- about Tony Blair's rise to power in the British Labour party - and "The Queen" which focused on the reaction of the British Royal Family to the death of Princess Diana.
"Special Relationship" will be Peter's directorial debut.
The film will also feature Michael Sheen as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who will be seen growing frustrated with Bill as his attentions move from politics to his own personal crisis.
"Special Relationship" starts filming in the UK and US in July.
I really have harped on this many times, but McCain screwed things up with his campaign reforms. His "fix" has violated the Constitution in so many ways that it is hard to fathom an American could write something like that. Well, maybe a Liberal who hates America could.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/mar/24/hillary-the-movie-case-pits-free-speech-vs-electio/
If a political movie falls into theaters a few months before Election Day but no one is allowed to hear about it, does it violate the First Amendment clause on freedom of speech? That's the constitutional riddle Supreme Court justices will consider Tuesday: Do American citizens have the right to hear political messages of their choosing at the movies, on DVDs and on pay-per-view television, or are those messages subject to restraints under the 2002 campaign finance laws?
The case before the court concerns "Hillary: The Movie," a documentary critical of Hillary Rodham Clinton that was produced by the conservative group Citizens United. It was released in theaters in January during the presidential primary season that concluded in June.
But the Federal Election Commission told the producers of the movie that any advertisements for the film would have to carry the same disclaimer as political advocacy ads. The filmmakers chose not to advertise at all and sued the FEC.

A Christian minister in London who has clashed with Muslims on his television show says he was brutally attacked by three men who warned him, "if you go back to the studio, we'll break your legs," the Daily Mail reported on Sunday. The newspaper said Reverend Noble Samuel was driving to his studio when a car pulled over in front of him. A man got out and came over to ask him directions.
"He put his hand into my window, which was half open, and grabbed my hair and opened the door," Samuel said. "He grabbed my cross and pulled it off and it fell on the floor. He was swearing. The other two men came from the car and took my laptop and Bible."
Police were treating the incident as a "faith hate" assault and were looking for three Asian men.
Pakistani-born Samuel, 48, hosts the hour-long Asian Gospel Show on the Venus satellite channel from studios in Wembley, England.
During the live broadcast, station owner Tahir Al, a Muslim, appeared on-air to condemn the attack.
Here is a real shocker. A commie working for CNN? Really? They are the most fair and balanced station in history! They represent all view points from the left-moderates to the far, far left. They even allow the occasional Republican to speak on their programs - as long as they have voted with the Left on something recently.
They are the best place to find stories - not news.

The presidential candidate [1] of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), the communist revolutionaries in El Salvador the Reagan administration battled in the 1980s, is, a Monday Washington Post story noted, "a former correspondent for CNN en Espanol [2]." In the March 9 article, "In El Salvador Vote, Big Opportunity for Leftists [3]," reporter William Booth relayed from San Salvador that the journalist-turned-politician "considers himself to be El Salvador's Barack Obama." Booth relayed:
After a 12-year civil war and a peace undermined by soaring crime, leftists in El Salvador are on the verge of completing a remarkable journey from armed struggle to the presidential palace.
Their candidate is a veteran TV broadcaster and morning talk show host, Mauricio Funes [4], whose Facebook page [5] lists his political views as "other." Funes, 49, a former correspondent for CNN en Español, was recently recruited by the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), the revolutionary group-turned-mainstream political party that is favored by polls to win the presidency in a vote scheduled for March 15....
Funes considers himself to be El Salvador's Barack Obama -- an agent of change in a country beset by the highest murder rate in Latin America and an economy in free fall.
The comparison is overt: Funes and the FMLN use images of Obama in their ads (despite objections by the U.S. State Department), saying both candidates were smeared by their opponents as allies of extremists. The FMLN television spots complete the link by employing the Obama slogan in English and Spanish, vowing "Yes, we can!"...
If the Liberals or the Media, is there a difference?, were to allow the Republican voice to be heard then there would no way to say the Republicans have no plan. By ignoring and silencing the Right, the Left can then blame the Right for not speaking out. What a plan!
This is why blogs and talk radio have come around. And why those same voices need to be silenced by the Left with the New Fairness Doctrine.
http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/the-politics-of-four-percent-mortgages/
First, let's be clear as to how much money falling mortgage rates can put in consumers' pockets. The average home price is about $200,000, and let's assume that entire amount is financed with a 6% mortgage. A reduction to 4% would save the homeowner $4,000 in interest costs every year. Multiply that by the 85 million homes in America and we get $340 billion in interest savings. And this isn't a one-time economic stimulus. That $4,000 is a permanent reduction in household expenses that the borrower can rely upon, as long as they continue to make their mortgage payment. Imagine the boost that could provide to the economy and the pressure it could take off America's cash-strapped families. It may even jump-start the new home sales market.
If a straightforward mortgage rate reduction that puts $340 billion in homeowners' pockets every year and could slow or stop further housing declines sounds like a simpler and better alternative than the $787 billion of phony tax rebates and pork barrel spending that was just passed by the Democratic Congress, then you're probably starting to understand why this Republican alternative wasn't widely debated.
What's even more egregious is that as the massive spending bill was being written in marathon backroom deal-making sessions, President Barack Obama continued to make the false claim that Republicans wanted to do nothing in the face of the crisis. This proposal for lowering home mortgage rates was just one of many alternatives that was introduced by the Republicans, including Senator Lindsey Graham's package of personal and corporate tax cuts.
The mortgage rate reduction proposal was killed, not because Democrats didn't agree with it, but precisely because it was a reasonable alternative that could have sparked intelligent discussion on the best way to improve the economy. When you're trying to push an $800 billion spending spree through Congress in the dead of night, the last thing you want is an intelligent discussion. But the fear mongering and false choices worked and the stimulus bill was passed. Where does that leave interest rates? Falling quickly most likely. Now the Democrats need the economy to recover to ensure a 2010 reelection, and the easiest way to do that is to keep interest rates and mortgage rates as low as possible.
I highlighted two parts of this story that are slanted.
First, the crowd was not laughing at the thought of Chicago being nuked, they were laughing at the thought of Liberals thinking one nuked city is morally different from ten.
Second, if this is the objective mainstream media, why are they making wisecracks?
This report is not objective at all. It is mocking and almost slanderous.
Besides, Mr Bolton is right. Allowing the Iranians and their terrorist followers access to nuclear weapons is foolish. It does not matter if they have one Bomb or twenty, it is still too many.
http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Crowd-Laughs-at-Nuclear-Threat-to-Chicago.html
Former U.N. ambassador John Bolton, speaking to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday, had the audience in stitches with his comments about nuking Chicago.Referencing remarks made by Barack Obama on the campaign trail, Bolton claimed the then-candidate said he thought "Iran was a tiny threat."
Crowd Laughs at Nuclear Threat to Chicago NBC Chicago.flv
ThinkProgress.org reported that Bolton tried to up the fear quotient in the room by raising the prospect of an Iranian-sent nuclear attack on an American city.""It's [a] tiny [threat] compared to the Soviet Union," Bolton said to the group, "but is the loss of one American city -- pick one at random: Chicago -- is that a tiny threat?"
The audience erupted in cheers and laughter at the idea of Obama's home city being obliterated.Unfortunately for Bolton, he got the then-candidate's quote wrong. Speaking in Pendelton, Ore., on May 18 last year, Obama said "strong countries and strong presidents talk to their adversaries. That's what Kennedy did with Khrushchev. That's what Reagan did with Gorbachev. That's what Nixon did with Mao. I mean, think about it. Iran, Cuba, Venezuela -- these countries are tiny, compared to the Soviet Union. They don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us. And yet, we were willing to talk to the Soviet Union at the time when they were saying, 'We're going to wipe you off the planet.'" [YouTube Video]
We surmise that must mean the joke... well, bombed.
The BBC is calling a Muslim group dedicated to overthrowing the West a "left-wing group"? What a crock.
I can't understand why these would be called "anti-US" attacks? Why not anti-German or anti-Swedish attacks? I bet the stores sold products from those countries too.
The slant on this story is crazier than usual. What else do we expect from the BBC?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7912949.stm
Three supermarkets have been destroyed and a fourth damaged in central Sweden in what police say might have been a series of anti-American arson attacks.Police spokeswoman Kia Samrell said more than 100 firefighters were called in to put out the fires overnight at the Swedish supermarkets in Sodertalje.
Ms Samrell said the police were investigating whether the left-wing group, Global Intifada, was connected.
Global Intifada claimed responsibility for two fires in Sodertalje last year.
It has also said it was behind arson attacks on vehicles belonging to the Danish and Russian embassies in 2005, and an attack on a Polish consulate in 2004, according to the Swedish Security Service.
"The targets have primarily been countries that are participating in the war in Iraq and the Swedish defence industry," it said.
The supermarkets targeted on Thursday were branches of Willys, and Ica and Tempo. The chains are all Swedish, but sell American goods.
The Left takes over the White House and now the Far Left Hollywood types finally can get demands taken care of.
I want to know who is against aiding the people of Darfur? President Bush tried to get a coalition of UN forces for it, and NO ONE wanted to help. Now, will The One finally decide to go it alone, like the Lone Ranger, or will he be able to find some others who are willing to save those poor souls? Clooney and his ilk jumped all over President Bush for going it alone in Iraq, even defining alone to mean less team members than a football team, yet more than a baseball team. I wonder how they will react to The Ones efforts to spread Peace?
I really hate activists who get face time because they are famous. If they were experts on the topic it would be one thing. Well, I guess on Darfur, there is no real expert except those who have been there. But Clooney still irritates me.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/feb/24/clooney-gets-white-house-promises-darfur/
Academy Award-winning actor and activist George Clooney met privately Monday night with President Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. to urge the new administration's action on the crisis in the Darfur region of the Sudan.Mr. Clooney told reporters that Mr. Obama said once a foreign policy review is completed, he would appoint a "full-time, high-level envoy" to the region to report directly to the White House.
"The administration has assured me that Darfur is one of a small handful of foreign-policy reviews being undertaken at the [most senior] level," Mr. Clooney said.
He said the envoy would be "a huge policy step" since, in many cases, envoys have only been in the region "when the fire starts."
The actor, who made a documentary highlighting the Darfur conflict and has been outspoken on the issue, said it was "nice to hear" that the region is a priority for the Obama White House.
